We finally finished our read aloud in class today. We have been reading "Pax" written by Sara Pennypacker. It is a story about a boy and his fox, Pax, who through a series of events and due to encroaching war are separated. Peter is determined to find his fox and goes off on his own encountering many dangers to be search for Pax. The story goes back and forth from both Peter and Pax's point of view. I love the story of Peter and Pax but also the budding friendship of Peter and Vola as well. she was quite a character. There were some emotional parts like Old Gray and the ending...although admittedly I am a baby...ok I cried my eyes out. Hey I wasn't the only one at least. :) I was a wonderful story that most everyone in class could make a connection too. I am excited for our next read alouds! After we ended the story we watched the clip below which is of Fox Village in Japan. <3

This week in Reading we have been discussing and exploring procedural text. Procedural texts are informational texts that list a sequence of steps needed to make or do something most commonly are recipes, directions or instructions. We started the week with the students following a procedural text to create Milk Rainbows! It was awesome.
Well the Fun Run turned out awesome! I am excited to find out how much the school raised for the kids and additional technology. I was so proud of all the kiddos for participating in the fun filled theme week. Any excuse for me to wear jeans and dress up is A-OK in my book. The students were all so determined on the day of the run... most all of them ran the maximum amount of laps!
Well, 4th grade had their first field trip and I would say it was a success. Definitely one of the most interesting field trips I have been on. We had the chance to take part in St. Mary's Physics Fest which is like and interactive science fair! I think the kids really enjoyed themselves, as evident by a few falling asleep on the bus ride back to school. #success
^----------I mean, hover board rides ...need I say more!?
I am happy to report that my students seem to love the classroom library! This makes me beyond happy. I really worked on it this summer after attending a seminar by Debbie Diller who is a leading author in literacy. One thing that stuck with me was her rule that a classroom library is a must, no matter what grade, and it should be a focal point in your classroom. I refurbished the bench and made the crate seats and they are a hit! Pinterest for the WIN :) We also had our first successful science experiment this week. Truth be told after about 20 minutes I was not sure how successful our 'circuit experiment' was going to be, but the kids worked and worked and BAM! There was light! I especially love the 'Thinker' pose some of the kids had while working on the experiment. You should have heard the roar of cheers and commotion when 1 group finally got the light to work. Shortly after 2 more groups lit up. It was definitely the hi-LIGHT of my week...ok I'll stop. We sent out our first "Tweets" this week. Gotta love one of my kiddos philosophical response to what their favorite part of the class has been so far..."Am I Thomas Edison?" lol. These kids crack me up!
...Our first week of school, that is... This week has been hectic for everyone but we made it out unscathed lol. The kids have been working on "getting to know us" projects and other artwork for our bulletin boards in the hall. I love getting to know the students and I am so excited for the bunch I have this year. This week we were also blessed with a donation of school supplies from the 'Mission City Firm' which is a fan club of the S.A.F.C (formerly the S.A. Scorpions). Myself and the kids were surprised by how much they donated. I was so proud as well that my class was happy to donate the excess to the other 4th grade classes. We even had enough to give some backpacks to the family liaison.
Meet the teacher night was absolutely fantastic. It was so wonderful to be able to meet most of my new students and parents. It was also nice to know that I wasn't the only one nervous :) I am so excited to start this school year. New school, new students and so much potential!
